Tyla has made music history by becoming the first African solo artist to reach one billion Spotify streams with her hit song “Water.” The track was initially released in July 2023, and it quickly found international success, peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart before going on to win the inaugural Best African Music Performance award at the 2024 Grammys, and taking home Top Afrobeats Song at the Billboard Music Awards. Official remixes of “Water” also featured high-profile collaborations with Travis Scott and Marshmello, widening the track’s worldwide reach. “We are incredibly proud of Tyla’s historic achievement,” said Phiona Okumu, head of music at Spotify in Africa, in a statement. “This milestone is a testament to her talent, hard work, and the power of music to transcend borders.” By joining the prestigious Billions Club, Tyla stands among other African artists who have achieved this significant milestone with their hit collaborations, including Tems, Wizkid, and Rema.
