Miriam Karanja and Kevin Holmes with the Arkansas Cancer Coalition.  May is Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month.  Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that comes from the cells in the skin that produce pigment called melanocytes.  It is potentially a deadly skin cancer, killing more young women than any other cancer. One in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer.  One person  dies every hour from skin cancer in the USA.  More than 1 million people will be diagnosed each year. 
    • Colorectal cancer is cancer that occurs in the colon or rectum.  Sometimes it’s called colon cancer, for short.  The colon is the large intestine or large bowel.  The rectum is the passageway that connects the colon to the anus.  Men in general are more likely to develop colon cancer, or at later stages. Some factors that may contribute to an increase risk are alcohol consumption, tobacco use, overweight and obesity, and more.
    • Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the body grow out of control.  When cancer starts in the breast, it’s called breast cancer.  Except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women.

KOMEN FOR THE CURE IS TO SAVE LIVES AND END BREAST CANCER FOREVER BY EMPOWERING PEOPLE, ENSURING QUALITY CARE FOR ALL AND ENERGIZING SCIENCE TO FIND THE CURES.  THE RACE PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY TO HONOR BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS AND TO REMEMBER THOSE WHO HAVE LOST THE BATTLE.  OF THE MONEY RAISED THROUGH THE RACE, 75% STAYS IN ARKANSAS TO FUND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, WHILE THE REMAINING 25% FUNDS NATIONAL RESEARCH GRANTS.  THE RACE WILL BE HELD IN DOWNTOWN LITTLE ROCK/NORTH LITTLE ROCK ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19. FOR THE FIRST TIME, THIS YEAR MEN CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE RUN/WALK. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE RACE VISIT WWW.KOMENARKANSAS.ORG OR CALL (501) 202-4399.
