MONDAY, October 7

Sheriff's deputies are investigating a double homicide in Saline County. Not many details available at this hour, though. We do know authorities were called to the scene near Hogue and Chicot around 5 p.m. Sunday.

One person is in custody. We'll be updating this for you as we get more information.

Sheriff's Deputies shot and killed a man who allegedly pointed a gun at the officers last night in Garland county.

Authorities were called to a home on Stanage Drive shortly before 11. The disturbance involved a male and female with the male believed to have a gun.

The officers say when the man came out of the house with a firearm, they asked him to drop the weapon. He reportedly refused, pointed his gun at officers. That's when they opened fire.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured. The investigation is ongoing.

There's a new Police Chief in town in Pine Bluff — well actually, he's not really new. He's held the position for the past 10 months.

Mayor Debe Hollingsworth announced Friday that Jeff Hubanks is the city's new permanent chief. This is actually his second stint with the department. He began his career in Pine Bluff in 1985 and retired as a lieutenant.

Hubanks says crime is down on his watch, and he believes the department will keep making progress.

The Department of Defense is expected to bring back hundreds of thousands of civilian workers who had been furloughed during the government shutdown.

More than 700 Arkansas National Guard technicians and civilian employees will be called into work today. However, some military technicians, civilians and guardsmen under Inactive Drill Training status will remain furloughed during the shutdown.

The House passed a bill Saturday providing back pay to federal workers who were furloughed. No word on when the Senate might vote on that bill.

Talking football now — The Broncos have been kicking butt all season up til now. They had to hustle a bit for their win over the Cowboys, but they got it done 51-48. Romo didn't give a bad performance; he threw for 506 yards and 5 TDs — it's just too bad about that one interception.

It was a classic SWAC slugfest in the Mississippi Capital. UAPB took some shots to the chin and gave some back, but in the end Jackson State had more punch, leaving the Golden Lions to swallow a tough 42-33 loss.

And it was another heartbreaker for the Hogs as they fell 10-30 to the Florida Gators. That brings the Razorbacks to 3-3. Elsewhere in the SEC, LSU beat the tar out of Mississippi State 59-46.

Weather's getting pretty cool now; time to break out the long sleeves and jackets. Look for highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. Clear all week long.
