PLANE CRASH KILLS TWO PEOPLE
The Baxter County sheriff's office says two people are dead after their small airplane crashed near Buffalo City in northern Arkansas. The plane went down about 12:30 Tuesday afternoon, starting a fire that was put out by local firefighters. The sheriff's office identified one of the victims as 62-year-old Robert Ross, a flight instructor for United Flying Services. The other was his son Michael Ross.
BIG MISTAKE AT ASU, SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS RELEASED
Big mistake at Arkansas State University. An employee accidentally sent more than 2,000 ASU employees' personal data-including Social Security and driver's license numbers- to everybody on a distribution list- of almost 150 people. Officials say an employee mistakenly attached a report containing the personal data on 2,484 members of the school's faculty and staff to an e-mail being sent to a distribution list with 144 e-mail addresses. School officials were directly contacting everybody to be sure that the file with the personal data was deleted from their computer memories.
BOOZMAN TO STOP USING ADS WITH UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS
The University of Arkansas says Republican John Boozman has agreed to stop using an ad highlighting his days as a Razorback to help his Senate bid. The school requested that the ad be withdrawn because it's concerned that the ad's use of university images and logos could be viewed as an endorsement of Boozman. In the 30-second ad, Boozman talks about the lessons he learned while playing football for the Razorbacks.
I-40 TRAFFIC PROBLEMS ON THE WAY
Travel between West Memphis, Ark., and Memphis, Tenn., has become a lot more difficult. Beginning Tuesday, the Tennessee Department of Transportation closed all but one lane in each direction on the Hernando DeSoto Bridge carrying Interstate 40 traffic between Arkansas and Memphis. The closure is part of the agency's decade-old effort to make the span earthquake-resistant. The lane reductions will last into November. Many motorists will probably decide to use the Memphis Arkansas Bridge downstream and south of the I-40 span.
SAU GRADUATE LEAVES SCHOOL 2 MILLION DOLLARS
A graduate of Southern Arkansas University has left $2 million to the school for scholarships for women seeking science and technology degrees. Cinda Hallman graduated from the college in Magnolia in 1966. The university announced Tuesday that the $2 million gift will become part of the school's endowment.
RACE FOR MAYOR WIDE OPEN IN CHICAGO
The race for Chicago mayor is suddenly on. Mayor Richard Daley has thrown the competition wide open by announcing he won't seek a seventh term. The decision ends 21 years of token opposition and prompts speculation about who'll next lead the nation's third largest city. Political observers expect a crowded field as Democrats seize the opportunity.
ZOMBIE CLASS OFFERED AT COLLEGE
Call it Zombies 101. The University of Baltimore is offering a new class on the undead. The course is being taught by Arnold Blumberg, the author of a book on zombie movies, ``Zombiemania,'' and the curator of Geppi's Entertainment Museum, which focuses on American pop culture. Students taking English 333 will watch 16 classic zombie films and read zombie comics. As an alternative to a final research paper they may write scripts or draw storyboards for their ideal zombie flicks.
